I always feel quite disgusted when people make sweepy comments
like that. It is not merely about generalising too much.
Buying a car is not necessarily a luxury for everyone - it may
after all be a necessity. When that happens, a
huge sum of money has been spent on the car and then there is the
maintenance cost and all. It is natural for the not-so-well-to-do
to try to skimp and save, even though it appears to be "penny wise,
pound foolish". Well, another way to reframe that would be to say
that people took money to buy car, so not much money to pay for car
damages when they happen.
